Tennis Elbow
What is Tennis Elbow?
Tennis Elbow, medically known as "Lateral Epicondylitis," is a common condition causing elbow pain. Despite its name, it does not only occur in tennis players. It is caused by micro-tears, inflammation, and degeneration of the wrist and forearm extensor tendons at their attachment point on the outside of the elbow (the lateral epicondyle), usually resulting from repetitive motions or overuse.

Common Symptoms of Tennis Elbow:
Symptoms of Tennis Elbow usually develop gradually from mild discomfort. Common presentations include:
-
Pain on the outer elbow: This is the primary symptom. Pain often worsens when lifting heavy objects, gripping, wringing towels, or turning doorknobs. The pain may radiate from the outside of the elbow down to the forearm.
-
Decreased grip strength: You may feel weakness in the hand or difficulty gripping objects tightly.
-
Stiffness: The elbow and forearm may feel stiff, especially in the morning or after periods of inactivity.
-
Limited mobility: Even light actions, such as brushing your teeth or combing your hair, may cause discomfort or pain.
Note: These symptoms can be similar to other elbow issues; professional diagnosis is crucial.
Who is at Risk?
Although named "Tennis Elbow," anyone who performs repetitive wrist and forearm movements can develop the condition. High-risk groups include:
-
Athletes: Those involved in racket sports (tennis, badminton, squash), golf, or baseball.
-
Workers:
-
Office workers (long-term use of mouse and keyboard)
-
Manual laborers, mechanics, and renovation workers
-
Chefs, cooks, and homemakers
-
Musicians
-
-
Age Group: It is most common in people aged 40-50
-
Poor posture or technique: Incorrect sports form or working posture increases the risk of injury
