Facial Palsy

What is Facial Nerve Paralysis?

When the facial nerve becomes inflamed, swollen, and compressed due to factors such as viral infection, immune system abnormalities, poor blood circulation, or injury, nerve signals cannot be effectively transmitted to the muscles. This causes paralysis and weakness of the facial muscles on the affected side.

The most common type, which has an acute onset and often an unknown cause, is called "Bell's Palsy."
